THE ART DECO STYLE

The French were the ones who had conceived the style we call Art Deco. It was a reaction to the stuffy Victorian styles and the start of the Machine Age. New York’s Chrysler building is a landmark example of this style a style that also influenced architecture, furniture, sculpture, clothing, jewelry and graphic design. Art Deco Clocks also benefitted from this design style as did buildings and furniture of the period.

The style was the first modern style in vintage clock making. One could also add the Art Nouveau period that preceded it as modern, while it was really a reinvention of the Romantic era with smoother Rococo features, that were part of it’s design style.

AN ART DECO MANTEL CLOCK with two shepherd dogs

This is a stunning c1925 Art Deco mantel clock from France,  in an Art Deco case with matching tazze, made of white onyx and brown variegated roseate marble with two large cast brass German Shepard dog figures, brass-tone metal dial with contrasting applied chrome-plated numerals, stylized steel hands and pendulum, eight-day, time and strike, spring-driven French movement. A minor flea bite on the top front edge of the right sidearm and another on the lower right edge of the stepped top piece are all that prevent this beauty from perfection. It features a chrome-plated case with an unsigned movement that was likely made by Marti or Japy Frères, who produced most of the Art Deco mantel clock mechanisms during that period.
